New entrants to drive cell phone penetration in Canada

Number of cell phone subscribers to accelerate with new cell phone providers
With a population of roughly 33 million Canadians, the end of the year should see over 23 million cellular phone subscribers. That will amount to a little over 69% penetration rate. Compared to other industrialized nations, this is LOW. With all the impending changes on the horizon, what will 2010 look like?
From January to the end of June of 2009, there were roughly 445,000 new activations. Among the Big 3, not including Q3’s numbers, Rogers continues to lead the way with over 8.1 million users, Bell with a little less than 6.5 million users followed by a surging TELUS at 6.25 million users. The real indicator here is the gains TELUS has made on second place Bell. But, what will the landscape look like next year when the fourth National player, Globalive Communications, enters the fray? What will the BIG 3 do in order to curb the changes to the competitive landscape? Will regional players like Quebecor ( ie; Videotron) and D.A.V.E eat into any of the market share? When the dust settles and Shaw Cable launches, will the stranglehold that TELUS has in Western Canada change? Will all these entrants mean better services, better solutions and competitive prices? Only time will tell but one thing is for CERTAIN.
Canadians will have more choices and will want whatever it is they want on their TERMS!
