Everything you need to know about cell phone features.
The cell phone industry can be very confusing and that’s why we put together this glossary about everything cellphone related, so that you can better understand what all of the bells and whistles mean – in simple terms.
| Cell Phone Features | Description |

| Anytime Minutes | Anytime minutes are typically calls that don’t qualify for free Evenings & Weekends or not part of a Calling Circle. |
| Calling Circles | A calling circle is a group of numbers that you can call at anytime for as long as you want without incurring addtional charges. By adding your most frequently called numbers you can save your anytime minutes for people outside of your calling group. |
| Caller ID | This feature displays the number of the incoming caller, so you don’t miss important calls and you can minimize unnecessary interruptions. |
| Call Forwarding | Forward your calls to any number you choose. (e.g. pager, cell phone, residential or business land line number or to a Voice Mail) |
| Call Waiting | Alerts you to incoming calls when you’re on the phone. |
| Conference Calling | Ever have problems trying to relay messages back and forth between two people when it would be much easier to have everyone on the line at the same time? Conference Calling allows you to have a conversation with two different people simultaneously. |
| Clips & Video Streaming | View your favourite internet video clip right on your cell phone.Video Streaming transforms your cell phone into a true entertainment device in the palm of your hands. |
| Carrier to Carrier (Local) | You can make or receive unlimited local calls to or from anyone with mobile service from the same carrier and save the anytime minutes from your rate plan. |
| Carrier to Carrier (Residential) | You can make or receive unlimited local calls to or from anyone with residential phone service from the same carrier and save the anytime minutes from your rate plan. |
| Carrier to Carrier (Business) | You can make or receive unlimited local calls to or from anyone with business service from the same carrier and save the anytime minutes from your rate plan. |
| Carrier to Carrier (National) | You can make or receive unlimited national calls to or from anyone with mobile service from the same carrier and save the anytime minutes from your rate plan. |
| Detailed Billing | Provides you with a detailed review of your call activity, including a list of phone calls made, the date and time of the calls, and the number of airtime minutes used for each call. It’s great for viewing and tracking your mobile phone usage every month. This is usually a chargeable feature for a paper bill. |
| Evenings & Weekends | Evenings and Weekends are free calls during determined hours, usually starting from Friday evening to Monday morning. Any calls made or received during your evening and weekend period have no additional charges and are not counted towards your anytime minutes. |
| Access any of your POP3 email accounts including Hotmail or Yahoo where ever you go. | |
| Games | You can download and install onto your cell phone interactive, multi-media, arcade-style games. Also access web based games from your browser to play against other people or by yourself. |
| Handset Insurance | If you are concerned about the loss, theft or damage to your cell phone, look into handset insurance. |
| Ideal Monthly Fee | Here is where you decide what you would like to pay for wireless service. |
| Instant Messaging | Stay connected with friends and family using real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text (e.g. MSN, Yahoo Messenger and Blackberry Messenger) |
| Incoming Minutes | Incoming minutes refer to calls received while in your local calling area. Depending on the number of incoming minutes you have this can help you stretch your pool of anytime minutes. |
| Internet Stick/Air Card | Stay connected any time any place by using a USB type device that allows your laptop to connect to the internet via the wireless network. |
| Included Monthly Data | A monthly data plan allows you to send/receive wireless e-mail; view e-mail attachments; access your office files, calendar and contacts; and access the Internet for services like news, banking, sports, entertainment and more. | Long Distance (Canada) | The number of minutes included without any additional charge when calling long distance numbers in Canada. |
| Long Distance (North America) | The number of minutes included without any additional charge when calling long distance numbers in Canada and the United States. |
| Long Distance (International) | The number of minutes included without any additional charge when calling certain international long distance numbers. |
| Location Services (GPS) | Get real-time, voice-prompted and visual turn-by-turn directions just like an advanced GPS navigation system. You can also find points of interests along your route and view detailed coloured maps with pan and zoom options to see where you are. |
| Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) | You can use Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) to send and receive pictures, movies and sound files from other wireless devices. This is typically used on non-smartphone devices. |
| Mobile Backup | If you have important information on your cellular device, mobile backup allows you to back up your information through the wireless providers network. |
| Music and Radio | Get unlimited access to the crystal-clear sound of commercial-free music, comedy, talk, children’s programming and more – whether at work, home, in car or on the go. Download hundreds of thousands of tracks on your cell phone. |
| Movies and Mobile T.V | Get real-time TV on your phone, so you can watch your favourite shows anytime, anywhere. Get the latest sports, highlights, breaking news and up-to-the-minute weather reports and more. |
| Push to Talk | A walkie-talkie type service that allows you to communicate via your cell phone. Best of all you won’t use standard calling minutes. (e.g. Mike phones) |
| Per Second Billing | Your billable time is calculated by the seconds used. Depending on your wireless service provider, per second billing can be calculated from the very first second or after the first minute. |
| Ringtones | Choose from hit songs, movie themes, or even celebrity voices to replace your current ringtone; also assign special ringtones for friends and family so you know who is calling. |
| Rollover Minutes | Carry over your unused minutes into the next month. |
| Share plan | Allows you to share a rate plan, including minutes, text messages and other features with your family or friends. |
| Social Sites | Stay connected with your favourite services such as Facebook, MySpace, Linkedin and Flickr. |
| Text Messaging/ SMS | Short Messaging Service or “texting” is the sending of short text messages between cell phones. |
| Visual Voicemail | Visual voicemail delivers voice messages to you as a text message (SMS) or email. Perfect for the person that is too busy to check every voicemail. |
| Voice Mail Messages | If you are unable to answer a call, this feature allows you to retrieve a voice message that you can play back at your convenience, and notifies you that a message is waiting. |
| Web Browsing | Allows you to surf your favourite sites on the web from your cell phone.You can also download files including games and ringtones or watch videos online. However, watching video on your cell phone can be extremely data intensive so understand your limits. Learn more about, how much data you have and what you can do with it. |
