Oh for the day when cheap prepaid comes to Canada. The incumbent carriers have been overcharging for years.

I recently came back from a visit to the UK where I bought a new prepaid SIM card for 99p (about CDN $1.60) and texts were 4p and all calls including from UK to Canada were 4p/min (CDN $0.06). As far as I know the prepaid top-up didn't have an expiry date. www.lycamobile.co.uk, in case anyone is interested.

Rates for consumers tend to be in the same range (.35/minute) that you are currently paying, on contract or pay as you go.

I like my sell phone and have a prepaid acct. which runs me about $150/year. I text, make and receive calls (inluding long distance) and take the odd picture and send it. However, am wondering if rates per minute would be cheaper for me on a contract or can I even get cheaper rates per minute (presently .35/minute). Is there a better deal out there considering what I already have?

Hi Viviene,
Thank you for your comment. From what I gather you have a phone already, which your daughter purchased for you and therefore only need service. Paying less than $15 per month with any of the carriers will be dificult to do on a post paid plan. It sounds like you are an ideal candidate for pre-paid service and although you might have to purchase a device first they are very cost effective and this may still work out better for you in the long run. I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Kye

I have the ridiculous thing that they say is the simplest available, given to me by my daughter because she will feel safer if I have something with me when I am out. When I was still working, I had a real cell phone that was nothing but a phone and I loved it; That is what I really want.

BUT given what I have, with all its stupid bells & whistles (camera, games and other such unphonelike trivia)maybe you can help me find the kind of service I need. I do not want to pay $15 a month for a service I use maybe for 2 minutes once or twice a month. Is there any company willing to be of service to a senior (I am 83)only if I need it.
