Yeah, I concur - it is a pass.
The MBP is the way to go.
I don't think you mentioned the issues with proprietary software/apps.

Apple is doing what they do best. They are never ones to spearhead a product category, instead they revolutionize it. Basically, Apple enters the smartphone industry and smashes it. They were not the first iPhone but they created an incredible design of higher quality and entered a market that was on the verge of exploding. They do this all the time, sometimes it flops, most the time it doesn't.

The iPad was not developed for everyone, unlike the iPhone which was. I am getting an iPad on day 1. I am a photographer and it will allow me to engage in conversation and have my portfolio with me at all times. I think they should have called it an iPal.

I spend a lot of time traveling in a car with my wife driving and I review a project via .pdf and other documents. I normally do so with a laptop -- this iPad answers a lot of problems for me by making my job easier and not having to carry a laptop around to review documents, look at contracts, etc...

Supposing we can get past grade school and over the name, I preferred iTab, there are a couple strong reasons to get one.

Since I do a lot of presentations, and spreadsheets, the idea of being stuck on a plane for 4-10 hours with an iPad is much more interesting than with my MacBook.

The way they have rewritten iWork to work with touch screen is awesome. Think Minority Report. The thing is, working ona desktop, touch screen will never be as intuitive, r natural as working on an A4 sheet on your lap, iPad.

This one feature alone redeems it in my opinion.

No Flash, this is a pain and certainly presents a problem for what is supposed to be "The Internet in your hand" and a gaming machine.

We will see how the multi function works when using iWork; however when you see me happily digging into my presentations on my iPad mid flight, don't be surprised to see a grin on my face!

Yours
