Is RIM pressing the panic button?

A few weeks ago, RIM announced on its earnings call that they will be doing some restructuring in order to get the company focused on “areas that offer the highest growth opportunities and alignment with RIM’s strategic objectives.” We all expected a few hundred layoffs, but that’s not the case…so how about a few thousand instead.

Today RIM announced that they will be cutting 2000 jobs.  In other words – 2000 people from its workforce.  I don’t know about you, but from where I sit, this is a huge number to be cutting at a time where one could argue that RIM should be realigning it’s team to focus on pumping out new devices, sooner rather than later.  To cut 2000 employees is a monumental effort in Office Spacing It (Think about it – How many internal Bob’s does that require? Answer: A LOT).  So it begs the question, is RIM pressing the panic button or are things a lot worse than communicated to date.

What do you think?  Is RIM pressing the panic button or should we expect more bad news in the upcoming months?

Aren’t they still profitable? Don’t they have billions in cash? Don’t see why there is such a panic.
