All iPad, little interest in Playbook, HP Touch according to survey

Apple iPad cited 94.5% of the time as main tablet

We can all agree that the tablet market is defined primarily by one device, the iPad! A survey conducted by Robert W. Baird in the US found that with regards to customers’ interest in tablets, 94.5% cited the iPad as their main device of interest, followed by the HP Touch with 10.5% and the playbook with a meager 3.8%.

While the HP Touch was cited as the second tablet of interest, it has not been selling very well since it went on sale in July. In fact, a recent report in AllThingsD indicated that Best Buy ordered 270,000 TouchPads but has only sold 9% of them and have asked HP to take the remaining back. Even the $100 price cut on the HP TouchPad failed to stimulate the kind of interest expected by Best Buy and HP.

Motorola Xoom came in third in this survey and received alot of interest during the first part of this year but was not competitive with the iPad. Along with the Xoom the Samsung’s tablet, the GalaxyTab 10.1 was next on the list but it has its own legal problems with Apple regarding similarities with the iPad which resulted in a temporary ban on sales in Europe.

The survey numbers seem to be at odds with market share numbers for the tablet. Android collectively represents close to 20% of the market with the iPad just under 80% of  the market. This was driven primarily because of the lower prices offered by the Android tables. While Android is doing fairly well as a whole, no one manufacturer has enough market share to compete with Apple’s iPad directly. So its clear, the tablet market is defined as the iPad and everyone else.

I am not a big fan of Apple, but I have to say, I’d be hard pressed to decide between an iPad and an android device just because of the extent to which Apple rules the tablet market. That much of a market share means that much attention from developers.

Phone apps and tablet apps are not necessarily the same, even if there is cross-platform support. Still I’d like to see another competitor break into the market if only to drive some innovation in tablet design.
