Research firm Gartner this month published reports which indicated that the Android platform has overtaken Apple’s iPhone as the world’s 3rd most popular smartphone operating system (OS) with 17.2% of the global smartphone market behind BlackBerry and Symbian (Nokia). In the US the Android OS was the number 1 smartphone OS in the US for the last quarter (Q2 2010). Worldwide sales of Android cell phones passed 10.5 million in the last quarter – that’s an astonishing 1300% increase over last year when sales were below 1 million. In 2 months, Android sales have risen from 100K per day to 200K per day, according to Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt.

What’s new this Summer? Samsung Galaxy S i9000
Samsung Galaxy S i9000

Samsung is gearing up for its mammoth simultaneous worldwide rollout of it latest Android Smartphone, the Galaxy S i9000, already available in Europe and expected later this month both in India and US. Canada is listed as one of the 100 + countries expected to get this device but chances are much later in the summer. It would not be surprising to see Rogers carry the Galaxy S as it has the network to support this quad-band GSM phone with tri-band 3G support.
